Witchraft on Radio Four

'Beyond Belief' programme, today (Monday) at 4.30 pm. This show is about witchcraft. I know little about it, in spite of having been interviewed for it. Listen if you dare. The Treadwell's gang is not optimistic, but, well, we can but hope.

The interviewer really specilises in trying to shock the interviewee a bit, which tends not to bring out the best in one. Alas.

Christina, you did phenomenally well! The interviewer was a bit of a twat, but you were very gracious and eloquent. Kudos :)

Twat? Surely, neither the depth nor the charm? ;-)

Lily, is there a podcast of this that you know of?

Listening. The obsession with Harry Potter is getting on my nerves.

mmmm. I can't listen now at work.

Did they get alot wrong?
Was I edited to the worst possible advantage?
Did they use my bit about skinnydipping?

AAAARGH.

They did use the bit about the skinnydipping - I have just been listening! I thought it came over well, despite the constant 'is it really just like Harry Potter' obsession of the interviewer. It seemed like a genuine interest on the part of the programme makers of Radio 4, albeit on a superficial level, rather than them taking an opportunity to vilify it. You have to remember that their more traditional listeners(Thought For the Day fans!)will probably all throw a blue fit now on Feedback, so I think it was quite brave of them really... Sorry I am anonymous on here - I don't have an account - I am Julie from Liverpool :-)

My sympathies. I'm sure you were great. I've just had a similar conversation with a NBC film crew, putting a spell on a Today presenter. Harry P also mentioned....

I have no doubt that you did very well, dear. I am starting to advocate press training for all the esoteric folk I know, especially leaders, teachers and esoteric academics. The British press are particularly nasty to deal with when they get something in their craw.

Thanks for the info, Julie and Liz. And Lily, bless you. Is it really like harry potter? Well, umm, yeah, we are imagining we are under psychic attack all the time and see the world as divided into Goodies and Baddies.
Arse.

Julie,
What a good observation about the producers! And about it being a brave show. Must remember who the average listener is. If it came across that it is based in nature, is devotional, has a sense of reverence for divinity, as well as being joyful, then really, that's good enough for me.

You really did make it come across that way, I would be happy if it had been me!
I was impressed with the vicars views as well - I was expecting vilification (if that is a word!) from that quarter - it was refreshing to get a reasonable discussion. I was a little disappointed with the guy with the '11 years training' and his view that you only counted if you had been initiated into the 'priesthood' or whatever that was. Ummm, what about solitary hedgewitches? Just seemed like it was a bit of an exclusive club for him...

yes, the prog was vaguely ok for a complete newbie to listen to, maybe a 6/10, the Vicar was actually rather good, very open, intelligent and honest- but i suspect the questions that preceded Christina's answers were not the ones that prompted those answers, if that makes sense? Retrospective editing of the questions to skew it a bit..... and the wiccan was a bit of a tw*t, and spouted some of the Janet Farrar 'we are the priesthood, pagans are just the mere congregation' nonsense that was so despised a few years back

memo to self if ever involved in media again- avoid this production team

Tw*t - see above regarding depth and charm of twats.

Christina, you were great. Apart from your interview it all seemed a bit superficial. The surprise for me was the Church Army bloke's thoughtful and measured view. No surprise, however, that they dropped Harry Potter in every five minutes. Didn't they have more than enough to occupy a reasoned discussion for half an hour without that?

An artist friend who is not pagan was listening live and reported to me that he felt it was extremely interesting and 'quite well balanced' with no particular bias. He was quite impressed that it should be on Radio Four!

With Liz's experience with the press and the BBC & now NBC as well, it seems we are getting mainstream exposure across the board.

Long may we chip away at the edges of prejudice....

It wasn't nearly as bad as it might have been. You came across as good natured, intelligent, and forthright . . . as opposed to the one who couldn't seem to get past his "11 years of training."

I was meaning to tell you that I listened to this and was very impressed with your generosity to the host who was annoyingly patronizing and baiting even. I thought the light-hearted tone and focus you brought to the answers was right on. You made me proud to be a witch! xoxo

You were very level headed and normal, the presenter seemed to over stepped a lot of boundaries to me :\

I love Harry Potter, but goodness! Sigh.
